The stitch length on a sewing machine is the space between each stitch and is important to getting the desired result for different sewing projects and fabrics. Choosing the right stitch length can improve your project’s durability and appearance, so experimenting with stitch settings on scrap fabric is a great way to see what works best for each fabric and purpose.
Different stitch lengths
By adjusting the stitch length on your machine, you determine how close together or far apart each stitch will be. This is controlled by your sewing machine settings.
When to use a short stitch (close together)
- For reinforcement: Close stitches provide stronger seams, making them ideal for areas where the fabric will undergo stress (e.g., seams on bags or heavy-duty items).
- For fine fabrics: Delicate or lightweight fabrics like silk or chiffon benefit from shorter stitches, as longer stitches can pull and distort the fabric.
- For decorative stitching: Short stitches are also used in decorative stitching, such as appliqué, embroidery, or quilting, to give a more refined, detailed look.
- For curved seams: Shorter stitches make it easier to sew curves smoothly because the stitches help control the fabric and maintain a clean line.
When to use a long stitch (further apart)
- For basting: Long stitches are quick to sew and easy to remove, making them perfect for temporary stitching, like basting or fitting adjustments.
- For thick fabrics: Longer stitches are better for heavy or thick fabrics like denim, canvas, or upholstery, as short stitches may get stuck or be too dense, leading to bunching.
- For stretchy fabrics: Longer stitches are often used for sewing stretchy fabrics to allow for some give in the seam, reducing the chance of stitches breaking.
- For topstitching: A longer stitch length works well for topstitching, providing a decorative, professional-looking finish, especially on items like jeans, collars, and hems.
