ABOUT THIS CLASS
Dressmaking Classes for Beginners
Learn how to sew a custom top from a pattern.
Join me for this fun, hands-on sewing class where you’ll learn how to make a top from start to finish. Perfect for beginners, this project introduces you to reading and understanding dressmaking patterns, including how to interpret markings and assemble each piece with ease.
The top you’ll create is a classic, versatile style that forms the foundation for many other designs. It can be customised to suit your shape and personal style, making it an ideal first step in building your made-to-measure wardrobe.
Whether you’re new to sewing or looking to refresh your skills, this supportive group class will help you grow your confidence and develop essential dressmaking techniques in a relaxed and friendly setting.
In this dressmaking class, I’ll cover
- How to read and follow a dressmaking pattern (pattern supplied), including interpreting pattern markings.
- Essential sewing techniques needed to complete your top.
- How to sew necklines and armholes using bias binding for a clean finish.
- How to adjust the pattern to change the length, fit, or overall size of your top.
- Tips for customising the top to suit your personal style and preferences.
- How to modify or add different sleeve styles to create various looks.
Fabric
You will need to bring enough fabric to complete the project based on your size.
- 1.5 metre wide x 1.5 metre long
- 1.1 metre wide by 2 metres long
These dimensions will give you some left over fabric in case you want to add sleeves or contrasting bottom. If you prefer to use recycled fabric, an old sheet or quilt cover is perfect.Alternatively, the helpful staff at Spotlight or a haberdashery store are usually happy to assist.
Note: It is recommended to bring a light to medium-weight cotton fabric such as lawn, poplin, shirting, double gauze or voile. Do not bring stretchy, polyester or synthetic fabric as this is difficult to sew, particularly for beginner sewers.
Sewing Expertise
By booking this class, you should have basic sewing and sewing machine skills as attendees are required to work on their own projects. If you don’t have basic sewing and sewing machine skills, it is recommended you attend the Basic Sewing Class first.
Note: This class is hands-on and is not an opportunity to bring clothes you want altered and for someone else to complete the work.
Sewing Machine
