ABOUT THIS CLASS

Clothes Altering Workshop – Single Class

Clothes altering, mending and upcycling is a cost-effective way to elevate your wardrobe, save money and reduce clothing waste.

By learning clothes altering skills, you can breathing new life into old clothes and alter those that don’t fit properly.

In this fun, hands-on clothes alteration workshop, I’ll share practical tips for tailoring and upcycling clothes. I’ll show you plenty of ‘real-life’ projects to inspire you.

Please bring clothes you’d like to alter or upcycle. At the start of the class, we’ll discuss alteration option for as many items as time allows. You’ll then have the opportunity to start working on your chosen alterations.

Note: Depending upon their complexity, some upcycling projects may take longer than the workshop time allows. In that case, attendees can either finish their project at home or book another class where they receive the guidance and camaraderie of the group.

In this class, I’ll cover

• Practical clothes alteration suggestions based on garments brought by each attendee (see above).
• Tips about what fabrics and clothes are easier to alter, upcycle and sew.
• Practical techniques to alter clothes so they fit properly and compliment your personal style and shape.
• Useful ideas for transforming existing garments into something new / different.

Sewing Expertise

By booking this class, you should have basic sewing and sewing machine skills as attendees are required to work on their own projects.  If you don’t have basic sewing and sewing machine skills, it is recommended you attend the Basic Sewing Class first.

Note: This class is not a clothes alteration service.  Workshops are a hands-on opportunity for attendees to bring clothes they want altered and undertake the work themselves.

Sewing Machine

Attendees are invited to bring their own sewing machine. A sewing machine can be provided, if needed. Please familiarise yourself with sewing machine terms and conditions »

Try sewing to see if you like it.

This lesson is the perfect way to try sewing without the upfront cost of purchasing a machine. I provide everything you need including a modern sewing machine, scissors, fabric, and accessories so you can focus on learning and having fun. It’s a great opportunity to see if sewing is something you’d like to pursue before buying your own equipment.

Duration and Cost

3 hours – $120 (includes GST).

If you’re an NDIS participant, you may be able to claim the cost of your sewing lessons under your plan. Speak with your support coordinator or plan manager to find out if it’s covered as part of your funding.

Attendees

Maximum: 4 people

This is a small, group class with a maximum of 4 people. This allows ample time for one-on-one attention allocated to each attendee.

Location

Classes and workshops are held at Frenchs Forest on the Northern Beaches, Sydney (near Northern Beaches Hospital).

There is plenty of free, untimed street parking across the road from the workshop and a bus stop is within easy walking.

Refreshments

Morning or afternoon tea will be available for attendees to enjoy. Unfortunately, we cannot cater to the specific dietary or allergy requirements of individual attendees.

Clothing Swap

The core purpose of Second Life Upcycling is to encourage recycling, repurposing, rethinking and reusing. With this in mind, feel free to bring along good quality clothes you would like to swap or give to other workshop attendees.  This encourages a circular economy and ensures your clothes go to a good home and are kept out of landfill (hopefully).

Note: Any garments or accessories not taken by other workshop attendees will have to be taken home.  I do not offer a recycling service.
